Living in downtown Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — Downtown Mobile is where thousands go to work and play, but it’s also where thousands of people live. City officials say that the residential population is growing as more people from all walks of life want to live in the heart of the city.

Joseph and Kristin Black have lived in downtown Mobile for 16 years.

Last fall, they moved from a townhouse on Dauphin Street into a newly constructed home in the DeTonti neighborhood.

“We thoroughly enjoyed our time on Dauphin Street, but as you get a little bit older, we’re ready for a quiet neighborhood-type feel,” Kristin said.

But that quiet neighborhood is just a couple blocks away from central downtown. Joseph and Kristin both work downtown and have downsized to one car as both can walk or bike to their jobs.

“It’s the overall time savings in your life,” Joseph explained. “I can go to work, go to the gym, and pick up things for dinner, by the time that most people who have gone to work have just gotten home.”
