Stuck 18-wheeler removed from Bankhead Tunnel

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — A truck driver passing through Mobile gets a quick lesson on how tall 12 feet really is. An 18-wheeler crashed into the east side of the Bankhead Tunnel Saturday morning.

It happened around 10 am. The truck cab just made it inside the tunnel before the cargo trailer smashed into the top of the tunnel.

Officials from the Alabama Department of Transportation and Mobile Police Department responded to the crash. No one was hurt. A wrecker truck was able to pull the cargo truck out of the tunnel. The crash blocked westbound traffic through the tunnel for about an hour. An officer on the scene said the driver didn’t notice the height warning alarm in time to stop.
