MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG)- It’s been just over a year since the Gulf Coast music legend Jimmy Buffett passed away after a long battle with skin cancer. Hundreds of parrot heads flocked to his hometown Saturday to honor his legacy.
“We are celebrating Jimmy Buffett his life, and how he brought everyone together,” Parrot head, Nick Christopher said.
Buffett was born in Pascagoula, Mississippi but grew up in Mobile and attended McGill-Toolen High School.
Fans say he always made sure to honor his hometown by hosting concerts in Mobile.
“Jimmy Buffett played in Ladd stadium in like ’85 and flew in on a helicopter. Landed out in front and came in and did his concert,” Parrot head, Ken Edwards said.
Memories like that are why Carol Hunter and Joseph Brennan organized the Son of Sailor festival, hoping to continue Buffett’s legacy.
“One of our goals is to make Mobile the capital of the Parrot Head nation,” Hunter said.
Saturday included food, drinks, and plenty of music from bands like Street Folks, Vibe Irie, Will Kimbrough, and the Official Jimmy Buffett tribute band A1A.
