Foley Middle School evacuated after smell – what officials say was the cause

BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. ( WKRG ) — A smell led to the evacuation of Foley Middle School Friday morning, according to Baldwin County Public School officials.

News 5 learned that a strong smell was reported at FMS before 10 a.m. on Friday following a fire drill.

The school system later emailed parents to inform them that the fire department and school officials responded to campus following the report.

According to officials, the school was subsequently evacuated, and the smell was investigated.

“The smell was coming from a material being used by the roofers working on the building,” the school system sent in an email to parents.

“We have asked for that portion of the construction project to stop and it will not be started again until students are out of the school.”

It is unknown which specific material caused the smell.

There has been no word of schedule changes at the school due to the smell.
