Palm Project giving a hand to disadvantaged students in Baldwin County Public Schools

FOLEY, Ala. ( WKRG ) — More than half the Baldwin County School system students are economically disadvantaged.

That can challenge academic growth and attendance, but a relatively new organization is helping to relieve some of that stress for students and staff by giving them a hand with some of their basic needs thanks in part to the Palm Project.

Volunteers with the Palm Project are packing up more than 100 boxes in what looks like a mini Sam’s Club in a warehouse in Foley.

“Those items range from school supplies to hygiene some household items, snacks and clothing,” Terry Burkle with the Baldwin County Education Coalition said.

All supplies are headed to “Care Closets” at all Baldwin County Public Schools.

“Fifty-eight percent of our students are economically disadvantaged and there are pockets of severe poverty in Baldwin County,” Burkle said. “So we want to do whatever we can to help meet the needs of those students, so they can be successful.”
