Gulf Coast residents reflect on Mel Showers’ impact at WKRG News 5 during his visitation

MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — As the Gulf Coast prepares to give a final farewell to former WKRG News 5 anchor Mel Showers, people gathered at the Truevine Missionary Baptist Church to say their goodbyes and pay their respects at Friday’s visitation.

The career and legacy of broadcaster Mel Showers will go down as one of the most memorable along the Gulf Coast.

Visitation, funeral service scheduled for Mel Showers

His warm smile made people eager to tune in to watch him every day.

“I just couldn’t wait to just come, you know, watch the news because of him, you know?” Mobile resident Cynthia Poe said.

The former News 5 anchor died on Oct. 19 at 78 years old.

Friday’s visitation allowed the community to pay their respects to the man who delivered their news over a 50-year career along the Gulf Coast.

“I’m one of his old neighbors,” Mobile resident Jolene Stallworth reflected. “And I just want to give him a little sendoff. And I’m just, you know, sending all my love to his family, and I’m praying for them.”
