In Mobile, Alabama, Terry and Candace Stevens have an okra plant that’s turning heads and raising stakes.
What started as a few seeds planted in spring has grown into a massive stalk, towering over their garden—and maybe even over the current world record.
The couple has high hopes that their beloved okra plant will officially dethrone the 16-foot 4-inch record held by New Orleans’ Jack Reno Sweeney since 2022.
As Candace put it, “It’s 17 feet 5 inches now, and it’s still growing!”
With the help of a local surveying team, the couple has officially measured their plant, and they’re excited to see how much taller it might get.
Growing the South’s Favorite Vegetable to New Heights
Okra is a Southern staple, known for its love of warm weather and steady sun, and the Stevenses gave their plant just the right start.
Terry started the seeds in a shed before moving them to the garden once temperatures warmed up.
