Faith Time: Tithing and what’s valued

MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — Faith Time is our weekly conversation on matters of faith. Joining us this morning is Clint Archer with Fellowship Baptist Church in Mobile. We wanted to talk about a subject that can sometimes be uncomfortable tithing. What is the definition of tithing?

Guest: Well, tithing is an old English word that means a 10th or 10%. And so it comes from the Old Testament responsibility of the Israelites to pay 10% of whatever income they had to the support of the Israelite government. So how is tithing different from the offering that you might have passing the plate around? Yeah, the way people usually refer to tithing would be your regular giving. And then an offering would be something that you do over and above that sort of a once or for when there’s a need.

Anchor: So why is tithing important?

Tithing is important because, well, giving financial giving to the support of the local ministry is something that’s commanded of Christians. It’s a barometer of where your heart is. Jesus said where your treasury is. Your heart is also. So it shows an investment in the kingdom works.
