MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — An old pool may get new life. The Mobile County Commission wants to reopen the Joe Radford Thomas swimming pool.
This pool along MLK Avenue was built a half-century ago and will be run by Franklin Primary Health Center. The pool has some overgrowth and could use some remodeling.
Officials say this is a project spearheaded by County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood. The County is contributing the bulk of the funding for this project.
Later this morning members of the city council vote on contributing a half million dollars to the project. It comes from Councilman William Carroll’s Capitol Improvement budget. Carroll says this will be used for rehabilitation for patients and recreation for the community. Carroll says it’s a needed resource in this neighborhood.
“Rehabilitation part of it is monumental, especially with the amount of seniors that actually use Franklin Franklin as the center, but also for the youth. I mean, with the neighborhood coming back with new infrastructure, with everything that’s happening here, it’s both recreational and it’s both rehabilitation,” said Carroll. Carroll estimates it could be a year and a half before this project gets done. He says the project will include the pool and locker rooms.
