Mystery substance ruins paintjob for Robertsdale drivers

ROBERTSDALE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — Drivers in Robertsdale are scratching their heads wondering what substance hardened onto the paint of their cars.

New details revealed in murder of Daphne restaurant manager as trial gets underway

For white cars, the substance looks like mud. For black cars, it looks like salt.

Wade Murrell, the owner of Lux, a car detailing shop, said this substance doesn’t just wipe off.

“Once it’s on there, it is a pain to get off,” Murrell said. “What we’re thinking it is, is going to be some sort of hardener of some sort. We don’t know exactly where it came from or what it is.”

No one knows where the mystery substance came from, and not every car has it. While the City of Robertsdale has resurfaced multiple roads in the past few months, City Engineer Greg Smith said there’s no way it came from one of his resurfacing projects.

“The one that I saw in person, it was not an oily substance of any kind,” Smith said. “It was almost like something else had been etched into the paint.”
