MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — Food, toiletries and other basic needs are in the hands of people in need around downtown Mobile thanks to the work of a local church. On the first cool weekend of the season, volunteers load up vehicles with bags of toiletries, food, and other needs. It’s a lot of stuff put into small sacks for men and bags for women.
“We are called by the Lord to be his hands and feet and to help those that are in need. And that is what we provide. We provide assistance not just through this distribution, but we also have a transportation program where we transport our community members who are poor, underserved, elderly, and disabled,” said Ana Maria Ramirez Sawyer with Colors of Love Ministry. Colors of Love Ministry is part of Mobile First Church of the Nazarene on Azalea Road. This is the sixth year for their bag distribution.
Their destination was downtown Mobile. Volunteers gathered behind the old Spot of Tea location ready with items in hand to give out.
“I love the fact that we can help people better their lives and stay healthy and be able to do things. You know, many of the elderly in that community don’t get out very much because they don’t have transportation,” said Sawyer.
