‘Angel Baby’: 1995 Mobile County cold case closed after infant’s mother found

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. ( WKRG ) — A 1995 cold case is officially closed after the mother of the infant found dead was identified, according to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office.

According to an MCSO news release, on May 9, 1995, a newborn baby’s body was found in Fowl River near Old Pascagoula Road.

After an autopsy, the cause of death was determined to be drowning and the manner of death was listed as homicide, according to officials.

Deputies said because they did not know who the infant was, they named it “Angel Baby.”

The case had been cold for 27 years when in November 2022 genealogy expert Olivia McCarter and Moxxy Forensic Investigations were able to identify “potential parents” of the infant.

According to the release, on Nov. 14, 2024, the mother was formally identified as the infant’s mom. She never reported the baby missing.

At the time of the infant’s birth, the mother was a juvenile, according to officials.
