Mobile NAACP hosts gun violence awareness event, shooting less than 2 miles away

MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) — On average, 125 people in the United States are killed with guns every day, according to Everytown Research. Gun violence has stolen the lives from so many right here in our own community. Today, a sea of orange filled Government Plaza. The Mobile Branch NAACP takes part in “Project Wear Orange” each year. The event calls for individual and collective action to end gun violence. City leaders had a strong message to the community tonight, “put down the guns.” But, as community leaders spoke, shots rang out less than 2 miles away.

“Frenicka Craig, the victim of the Sage Park shooting. Carl Williams, Sanger Theater. The two-year-old that was shot in the face at St. Stephens Woods in Prichard. Jemetrius Wilson. Tristan Williams. Marco Alverado. Christian Aponte, Angel Espera,” says Shalelah Dowdy, VP of the Mobile Branch NAACP. “These are all people that have been impacted by gun violence in the year 2025.”
