Spanish Fort home invasion, shooting leads to arrests and frustration over ‘revolving door of justice’

SPANISH FORT, Ala. (WKRG) — A tree-covered dirt road just off Driftwood Lane in Spanish Fort was the scene Tuesday night of a home invasion and shooting.

“Made entry into his residence and, in doing that, were trying to assault him inside his residence. He was able to get free and take off running. While he is running, he hears many shots go off, one of them striking him in the arm. That’s how we get the call,” Spanish Fort Police Chief John Barber said.

The victim is expected to be OK. The two men police said are responsible are identified as LaDarious Nichols, 27, now charged with burglary and assault for shooting the victim, and Carl Winston, 35, who is charged with burglary.

“It’s over a woman, unfortunately, but it got to the point where you are breaking into somebody’s house, pushing them in to assault them, that is a home invasion,” Barber said.

What happened on Vodie Watts Road is bad enough, but the chief says what may be more concerning is the number of times at least one of the suspects has been arrested and released…
