Traffic changes coming to downtown Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) — There are big changes in store for downtown Mobile streets. On Tuesday, the city council approved contracts for work that will lead to traffic lights coming down and one-way streets becoming two-way. It’s part of a broader initiative to make downtown more walkable. The Downtown Mobile Alliance says it engaged Jeff Speck, one of the nation’s top urban planners, to come up with the plan. It was released in July 2021.

“You come up with a plan, and then the engineers have to design that,” said Carol Hunter, Mobile Downtown Alliance Director of Communications.

Out of 58 traffic signals in the downtown area, the city says 23 will be converted to 4-way stops with the goal of slowing down drivers…
