First MPD officer was killed in the line of duty 161 years ago

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Captain Billie Rowland has spent his time with the Mobile Police Department keeping up with their history and has found information on what happened on June 9, 161 years ago.

On July 9, 1864, the Mobile Daily Advertiser and Register published a news story about the assault on a local MPD Officer, Sergeant James Philips.

According to the paper, a man named Lute Nieman was breaching public peace when Sgt. Phillips approached Nieman with a goal of arresting him on July 8.

It was then that Neiman allegedly pulled out a sheath knife and stabbed Phillips in the left side…
