On July 9, 1864, the Mobile Daily Advertiser and Register published a news story about the assault on a local MPD Officer, Sergeant James Philips.
According to the paper, a man named Lute Nieman was breaching public peace when Sgt. Phillips approached Nieman with a goal of arresting him on July 8.
It was then that Neiman allegedly pulled out a sheath knife and stabbed Phillips in the left side…
