Mobile County, Ala. (WBMA) — A third human case of West Nile Virus (WNV) has been confirmed in Mobile County this year, according to Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County. The virus, a form of mosquito-borne encephalitis, poses significant health risks, with symptoms ranging from high fever and severe headache to paralysis and seizures. In rare instances, WNV can lead to coma or death.
Dr. Michaels emphasized the importance of reducing exposure to mosquitoes, particularly during peak activity times at dusk and dawn. “It is extremely important that people taking part in outdoor activities make every effort to reduce their exposure to mosquitoes and should always keep mosquito repellent with them when outdoors,” he said. He also advised draining standing water, using screens on doors and windows, and covering skin with clothing or repellent.
The Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) is ramping up efforts to control the mosquito population. Vector Services will increase spraying and conduct door-to-door surveys in affected areas. Inspectors will trap adult mosquitoes to test for WNV presence…
