Baldwin Schools increasing outreach to grandparents caring for school-aged children

LOXLEY, Ala. (WKRG) — Baldwin County public school students return to class three weeks from today. Some families still need to get registered and the district has a special session today in Loxley to help people overcome technological hurdles.

This event is open to anyone across the district but it’s called “Grateful for Grandparents” and puts a special emphasis on helping the growing number of aging relatives who are the caregivers for school-age children.This will be at the Baldwin County Schools Satellite building on B Avenue off Highway 59 in Loxley today from 8 to noon. Between “My School Bucks” PowerSchool and other apps and platforms, the process of being properly registered for school can be difficult and sometimes overwhelming for older adults. Whether it’s unfamiliarity with computers, spotty internet connections, or difficulty uploading the right documents–this session is meant to guide them through the process.

Organizer Jennifer McCrary said she started the extra outreach to seniors caring for school-aged children as they noticed a rise in the number of grandparents who find themselves going from retirement back into being full-time parents…
