Mobile man sentenced for arson at grocery store

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — A Mobile man has been sentenced to federal prison for arson at a local grocery store.

According to a news release from the United States Department of Justice, Timothy Jones, 41, was sentenced to five years in prison for intentionally setting fire to the Greer’s Downtown Market at Government and Broad Streets in Mobile.

Court documents indicate that in February 2024, Jones set a fire inside the Greer’s while it was open and had customers and employees inside. Surveillance video caught his actions on tape, and he was arrested nearby soon after he set the fire.

No one was injured, but the store was damaged, the release said.

In addition to his prison sentence, Jones was sentenced to three years of supervised release after he gets out, and was ordered to pay around $25,000 in restitution to Greer’s to compensate for losses suffered due of the fire, according to the release…
