Mobile medical clinic, lawyers took advantage of accident victims, DA’s Office alleges

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Alleging a wide-ranging fraud scheme, the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office this week filed a lawsuit against a local health clinic and lawyers from several out-of-state firms.

The civil suit, filed in Mobile County Circuit Court, seeks a court order to halt what prosecutors contend are deceptive business practices that took advantage of accident victims. Prosecutors allege that South Alabama Medical & Rehab on Old Shell Road hired “runners” to cold-call accident victims under the guise of “patient advocates” and insinuated that they were affiliated with their insurance companies.

“The runners had misrepresented who they were, so people went to the clinic who would not have otherwise gone to the clinic,” said Mobile County Chief Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Susman. “They went to the clinic and made an agreement to receive treatment there, thinking they were getting a different kind of treatment than they actually were receiving, because they … misrepresented to them the type of services that were provided.”…
