Mobile fire station to close again for repair work

MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) — On the same day the Mobile City Council will consider awarding a contract for the first new fire station in 4 years, they will consider nearly $200,000 in repairs to a 56-year-old station.

On the agenda is a $4.5 million contract to replace Fire Station #19 on Azalea Road that was built in 1957. At the same meeting, they will consider awarding a $191,131 contract to address “condensation issues inside” Fire Station #8, Melton Station, on S. Lafayette Street, built in 1969.

In 2022 the Melton Station was closed for nearly 6 months when roof replacement work uncovered asbestos and mold. Crews from the Melton station were relocated to other stations in the midtown/downtown area from June to November.
