The class kicked off at 6 p.m. with a 30-minute talk on personal safety at the Fairhope Civic Center. Topics ranged from consent, stalking, safety, and self-defense.“If they’re ever put in a position where they need to defend themselves, they’ve already learned something. Then go back to the back of their brain and say, I’ve learned this, and I know what to do,” Don Roberts, a training officer and defense tactics instructor for the class, said. After the talk, the real action started once the girls learned how to protect themselves physically. Officers demonstrated play-by-plays on what to do in various situations.
“Kick them, knee them, punch them! Do whatever you have to do to protect yourself,” Roberts said.
