MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) — A proposed land sale that sparked significant public backlash has been halted by the city council. The ordinance, introduced in April, aimed to sell property used by the Dearborn YMCA to the Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association (MAMGA) for just one dollar.
At a community meeting, city council members assured more than 60 attendees that the sale would not proceed. The properties in question include a vacant lot on Lyons Street and another on Dearborn Street, which the ordinance claimed were no longer needed for public or municipal purposes.
Colette Huff, CEO of the Dearborn YMCA, disputed this claim, stating, “That statement ‘now not needed for public use’ is incorrect.
