SPANISH FORT, Ala. (WALA) – FOX10 News is learning more about a traffic incident that held up drivers this morning along the Interstate 10 Bayway.
Crews with the Spanish Fort Fire Rescue Department were called after an accident on the Bayway to assist in the rescue of a person in the water. Fire department officials said witnesses told them it was the driver of the vehicle involved who jumped from the Bayway into the water.
When SFFR crews got on the scene, they said they saw the person in about chest-deep water near mile marker 35 near the Battleship exit. After calling for assistance from Daphne Search and Rescue and marine patrol, Spanish Fort crews threw the person a flotation device and determined they could make the rescue themselves.
Authorities said they lowered a firefighter to water and hoisted the person to safety with a rope. Officials said the person did not appear to have injuries but was still taken to an area hospital to be checked out…
