City Council declares long-closed Mobile movie theater ‘public nuisance’

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – A deteriorating building that once was a movie theater could be torn down if the structure’s owner does not secure it.

After a public hearing Tuesday during which no one spoke, the Mobile City Council voted to declare the building at the Shoppes at Bel Air a “public nuisance.” That gives the owner 10 days to respond.

City officials said the goal, as with all cases like this, is for the property owner either secure or demolish it. If that is not done, the last resort would be for the city to take that action – and then bill the owner…
