Scarborough: The feature of Kane Wommack’s defensive system I don’t understand

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Kane Wommack’s a smart guy. The son of a longtime SEC defensive assistant coach and coordinator, he grew up in the game. He played offense, so he knows that side of the ball, too. There’s a reason South Alabama made him a first-time head coach at only 33 years old.

And there’s a reason Kalen DeBoer wanted to hire him away to be his defensive coordinator at Alabama. Their first season together brought mixed results, of course, but it was a new system filled with new personnel. It was always going to take time to gel.

What we saw during Saturday’s loss at Florida State, in which the Seminoles scored 31 points rushed for 230 yards, wasn’t a defense coming together in Year 2. It was a defense falling apart right out of the gates. The tackling and pressure and effort and intensity weren’t good enough. Nothing about it was good enough…
