Personnel Board upholds Mobile police officer’s firing related to conduct after son’s wreck

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – The Mobile County Personnel Board has upheld the firing of a police officer whose conduct following his son’s traffic accident came under question.

The board found that Gary Rogers, a decorated 21-year veteran of the Mobile Police Department who rose to the rank of sergeant, acted improperly when he removed his son’s fleece pullover jacket. City lawyers contended he was untruthful about his actions when questioned by investigators.

“Rogers has an impressive record of service to the police department, as borne out by the commendations, awards and service ratings he has received over the years, and testimony of his character witness,” the board wrote. “Nonetheless, dismissal is the appropriate sanction, because he committed a major violation of police procedure by removing the fleece from the accident scene, thereby impeding the investigation of a DUI fatality.”…
