The Great Miami Hurricane of 1926 — 99 years later

(WALA) – On Sept. 18, 1926, the Great Miami Hurricane tore across South Florida, then re-strengthened and slammed into the Gulf Coast.

Escambia, Mobile, and Baldwin counties were hit by hurricane-force winds and a surge up to 11 feet. Downtown Pensacola was left partially underwater.

This storm changed Florida history, ended the land boom, and even gave the University of Miami football team its name — the “Hurricanes.”…
