Local food banks work to meet the needs of those impacted by government shutdown

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – With the government shutdown approaching three weeks, many federal workers are starting to miss paychecks. Non-profits like Prodisee Pantry and Feeding the Gulf Coast are stepping in to meet food needs for them and their families. Prodisee Pantry recently opened up their distributions to federal workers in Mobile and Baldwin County and added a special distribution just for them last week. Executive Director Deann Servos says they’ve already helped 16 federal employee families over the last two weeks.

“Families have received not just a shopping cart full of healthy food, but they’ve received hugs we’ve wiped away tears this is stressful for those who are not receiving paychecks,” said Prodisee Pantry Executive Director Deann Servos.

Feeding the Gulf Coast, which serves 24 counties in South Alabama, South Mississippi and the Florida panhandle has recently added extra distributions as well. President & CEO Michael Ledger says they’ve already helped 500-1,000 people since the shutdown started, and they just received a call to help more this morning…
