Mobile man accused of sparking New Year’s Eve mass shooting pleads guilty to murder

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – The man accused of sparking a deadly shootout at a downtown New Year’s Eve celebration pleaded guilty Monday.

Thomas Earl Thomas Jr. was scheduled to have a hearing on his “Stand Your Ground” claim but instead entered a “blind plea” to murder and first-degree assault. That means prosecutors have not promised to recommend a lighter sentence.

Mobile County Circuit Judge Vicki Davis scheduled Thomas’ sentencing for January. He faces 20 years to life in prison…
