Ann Williams: A trailblazer in Mobile Fire-Rescue retires

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Nearly 30 years after breaking barriers inside Mobile Fire-Rescue, Ann Williams is preparing to retire.

“Angela Young came to me one day and said, Let’s go put in an application to the fire department. I said, Okay, here I am. Unfortunately, she changed her mind. But here I am, 30 years later,” said Williams

Williams made history in 1995 when she became the first Black female firefighter in the department, a milestone she says she didn’t even realize at the time.

“I did not realize that until I actually started working them in spaces and, you know, that’s when I realized I was the first black female firefighter,” Williams said…
