‘They shot first:’ 911 transcripts show what Semmes business owner said after shootout with police

SEMMES, Ala. (WALA) – 911 transcripts reveal what Johnny Bowman Jr., owner of Bowman’s Auto Air, told 911 operators after he got into a shootout with Semmes police inside his business on Jan. 4.

The gunfire started while officers were investigating a possible burglary at the business.

Shortly after 3 a.m., Bowman, who was shot five times, made his first call to 911, telling the operator he had been shot and was bleeding bad. When the operator asked who shot him, he said he didn’t know and “they were in the building. I saw flashlights and… the shooting started.”…
