Mobile DA urges Aniah’s Law expansion after couple accused of attempted murder of officers

MOBILE, Ala. (NBC 15) — This year voters will be asked if they want to expand Aniah’s Law and allow judges to deny bond for suspects charged with attempted murder and shooting into occupied buildings. Mobile County District Attorney Keith Blackwood says he would’ve used Aniah’s Law to seek no bail for a Midtown couple charged with attempting to kill police officers by shooting at them during a standoff Sunday. Lt. Lorenzo Matthews was hit near his abdomen and is recovering at the hospital. The judge set cash-only bonds at $3.1 million for suspects Justin Sinea and Aerielle Perreault during a hearing Monday.

“That is an example of a case where we would have requested an Aniah’s Law hearing. There are 12 counts of attempted murder, which at this point are not eligible for Aniah’s Law,” said Blackwood.

The law is named after after Aniah Blanchard, a college student who was kidnapped and murdered in 2019. Ibraheem Yazeed was out on bond for other violent offenses when he was accused of killing her. The bail reform law is meant to stop repeat offenders and prevent tragedy…
