Police raid at Summerdale Volunteer Fire Department raises questions, concerns

SUMMERDALE, Ala. (WKRG) — A police raid of the Summerdale Volunteer Fire Department late Friday night by order of the town’s mayor has many questioning the legality and reasons behind the search.

“Please quit calling this a raid,” said Summerdale Mayor Randy Farris at a special-called town council meeting Thursday afternoon.  “We have a right. It is town property, and we have the right to inspect that.”

Close to midnight on Friday, two Summerdale police officers entered the town’s main fire station off County Road 32.

“At the order of the Police Chief by order of the Mayor,” said Summerdale Fire Chief Reed Moss, “requesting to know who was at the fire house and they were there to seize a document of the sign-in log of the fire department.”

Mayor Farris confirms he gave the order after he says he heard people were living in the firehouse.  It’s an order he now calls a mistake…
