The decision to separate public and private schools in post-season play by the Alabama High School Athletic Association ensures that if they make it there again, the competition on the other side of the ball will be from another private school.

“I wasn’t shocked but disappointed,” said Bayside Academy Head of Schools Phillip Scott. “I was hoping we would have an opportunity to come up with some solutions that would be good for everybody.”

Bayside Academy is now in the smaller classification for private schools. The AHSAA says new classifications are based strictly on enrollment to provide competitive balance.

“We’re talking about fundamental fairness and having schools that can compete,” said Phillips. “The idea is to enhance competition, again, for us to play a school that is a third of our size, which doesn’t seem like fair competition.”
