Oxford reels from worst ice storm in decades as Gulf Coast faces bitter cold

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Bitter cold and harsh wind chills gripped the Gulf Coast Monday as a small Mississippi community 300 miles away dealt with what officials called the worst ice storm in decades.

Oxford, Mississippi, home to the University of Mississippi and about 27,000 residents, remained encased in a thick layer of ice that turned roads, trees and power lines into hazards. The storm left widespread damage, massive power outages and more than an inch of ice on some surfaces.
