MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) — In observance of World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day, the Mobile County Health Department is educating the public on how NTDs impact the Gulf Coast.

According to an MCHD news release, heavy rainfall, warm temperatures, and climate change can increase the risk of NTDs along the Gulf Coast by expanding vector populations.

“Neglected tropical diseases may sound far away, but the conditions that allow them to spread — heat, humidity, flooding, and standing water—are very familiar along the Gulf Coast,” said Dr.Kevin Michaels, Mobile County Health Officer. “World NTD Day is a reminder that protectingour community means paying attention to emerging infections as well as the ones we alreadyknow.”…
