Mobile man’s cold case murder trial gets underway with jury selection

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Lawyers on Monday picked a jury for a cold case murder that took nearly a decade before police made an arrest.

Jervoris Scarbrough, 41, of Mobile, is charged with murder and first-degree kidnapping. Prosecutors allege that Scarbrough shot David Patrick Kyles in 2014, but investigators did not arrest him until 2022.

Scarbrough was the first person targeted by Mobile County prosecutors under Aniah’s Law, which gives judges greater discretion in denying bail. It was the first – and to date, only – time the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office lost an Aniah’s Law case. A judge ruled against prosecutors and set bail for Scarbrough in 2022…
