Mobile man who skipped jury’s verdict could be held in contempt

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – A jury last month found a man not guilty of shooting into an occupied building, but he still might go to jail.

Otha Shamburger, 69, of Mobile, attended the start of the trial but was not present for the end – including when the jury acquitted him.

That prompted Mobile County Circuit Judge Jill Phillips to schedule a contempt hearing Tuesday. Typically, a contempt charge arises when a defendant flees or a witness refuses to testify.
