After nearly a year docked in Mobile’s port, the SS United States, a passenger ship once declared the fastest ocean liner in the world, has a departure date on the horizon.
The famed Cold War carrier vessel, out of service since 1969, is tentatively scheduled in April to head down to Florida’s Destin-Fort Walton Beach on its way becoming the world’s largest artificial reef, according to Okaloosa County spokesperson Nick Tomecek.
