Secret Service visits almost 400 Mobile businesses to talk about card skimming

The United States Secret Service partnered with federal, state and local law enforcement to host a two-day program on Friday about the dangers of illegal payment card skimming and the Electronic Benefit Transfer fraud.

Almost 400 businesses in and around Mobile saw law enforcement stop by for a personal visit. While they were there, officers checked for and removed illegal skimming devices from gas pumps, ATMs and point-of-sale terminals. 10 teams of Secret Service analysts worked with local agencies, causing officers to recover three illegal skimming devices in Spanish Fort, Chickasaw and Mobile. Altogether, the operation prevented a loss of up to $3.1 million for the government.

The law enforcement officials also provided businesses with educational material on skimming and Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) fraud so that they can identify warning signs of illegal skimming in the future…
