Deep Gras hits Mobile, as crowds swell for the home stretch to Fat Tuesday

If you’re riding a dragon under the gnarled limbs of live oaks festooned with strands of colored beads while thousands of people scream for you to throw something to them, this must be Mobile.

And if there are more than 100,000 of those screaming onlookers, we must have entered the Mardi Gras home stretch known as “Deep Gras,” the five-day party culminating in Fat Tuesday.

Such was the case Friday night as the Crewe of Columbus and the Krewe de Secondline paraded in downtown Mobile, accompanied by Budweiser Clydesdales, a host of high school marching bands and other entertainment. See photos in the accompanying gallery…
