Merry Widows wail, crowds cheer, and one lucky reveler leaves with a top prize at Mardi Gras event

Wearing a “Joe Knows” ballcap outside the Old Church Street Graveyard on Sunday, Tanner Parrish waited patiently for the famed Merry Widows of Joe Cain to make their annual arrival and pay homage to their “beloved Joe.”

What he didn’t expect was to leave with the most coveted trinkets of the afternoon—one even a Widow couldn’t bestow.

“Unexpected and amazing,” said Parrish, 24, of Prattville, grinning after Pop’s Midtown co-owner Josh Cameron surprised him with a Joe Cain–inspired championship belt, a matching “Joe Knows” chain necklace, and a stuffed Joe Cain doll…
