Judge considers bail request for murder suspect in mistaken identity case

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – A judge heard arguments Wednesday on whether to grant bail to DeAngelo Merrill, who is charged with murder in what police say was a case of mistaken identity.

Prosecutors allege that Merrill forced his way into an apartment at Pathways Apartment Homes in September 2021, seeking revenge for his girlfriend’s shooting. James Jones, a retired Army veteran on kidney dialysis who had nothing to do with the prior violence, died from gunshot wounds.

Merrill previously had been denied bail because of a probation revocation. Now that Merrill’s sentence in that case is over, his lawyers argue he’s entitled to bond…
