Capital murder trial reset for man accused of killing while on bond for another killing

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – A capital murder trial was pushed back to April for a man prosecutors say killed someone while out on bond on a separate murder charge — a case that led Mobile County to change how it tracks suspects on bond.

Nyyon Sanders, 20, is accused of killing Joseph Evans Jr. at the Dauphin Gate Apartments in 2024. Prosecutors say Sanders let his ankle monitor die before the shooting. The private ankle monitoring system Sanders had at the time was suspended.

Ankle monitor overhaul

Following the case, the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office took over issuance of all ankle monitors to suspects out on bond, replacing the private monitoring system previously in use.

Trial details

Sanders appeared in court Wednesday for a hearing. His attorney requested a youthful offender hearing. Sanders has pleaded not guilty in the shooting death of Evans.
