A new Alabama coastal place to find ‘the best fried shrimp in the entire civilized world’

Beach-bound visitors arriving in coastal Alabama this summer will find that an old favorite – a restaurant that proudly promises “the best fried shrimp in the entire civilized world” – has opened a new location.

When they get there, they might find the guy who founded Doc’s Seafood Shack more than 40 years ago, watching attentively to see if their experience is everything he thinks it should be. At 83, Richard Schwartz remains almost obsessively involved in the fine details of the business – from the nuances of the greeting you get when you walk in the door to the cut of the crinkle fries to the diligence required to keep those famous shrimp living up to the sales pitch.

“I just love being here,” he said during a recent visit to his newest venture, a location tailor-made to capitalize on booming growth in the beach-adjacent city of Foley. “Yeah, this lights me up.”…
