14-year-old boy with autism died after his mother left siblings home alone, prosecutors say

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA/Gray News) – An Alabama mother is facing charges after prosecutors say she left her two teenage children with autism home alone overnight, resulting in the death of her 14-year-old son.

Amanda Marie Morgan pleaded not guilty Tuesday to felony murder and aggravated child abuse charges. Prosecutors say the mother would leave her two children with autism home alone for long periods of time. This allegedly resulted in the death of her 14-year-old son.

According to the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office, Morgan left the 14-year-old and his 16-year-old sister alone at their Theodore home overnight in October 2025.
