Mobile triples critical roof repair grants for homeowners

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis announced an expansion to the city’s Critical Repair Grant Program that will triple the number of residents who can receive help fixing their roofs.

The city of Mobile’s Critical Repair Program uses federal funding to help low-to-moderate-income homeowners repair or replace their roofs.

“A lot of these homes are heading towards blight, and degrading to a level where one day we might have to vote and tear it down. We wanna stop that from happening,” Cheriogotis said.

Program growth

The program serves around 75 households each year. In 2026, that number is expected to jump to more than 220 families. The expansion is funded by an additional $900,000 in discretionary funding from the mayor and was a campaign promise…
