Turlock instructor strives to bring live music to downtown

Turlock’s newest music teacher wants to amplify live music in the region, one student at a time.

Originally from San Jose, Malachi Hernandez, 45, has been a musician for over two decades. He started his career in 2000 in Santa Cruz County, writing music for high school plays before teaching and performing. He earned a degree in music from De Anza College in 2015, with guitar as his main instrument.

His career as a working musician came to a halt during the pandemic. All his contracts and gigs got canceled, and living in the Bay Area suddenly became unaffordable…
