Van Buskirk Community Center Gymnasium to reopen Tuesday

The Van Buskirk Community Center Gymnasium on Houston Avenue will reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

The Stockton gymnasium was closed in 2020 because of COVID-19 and just before its reopening in the summer of 2021, the gymnasium flooded, city spokesperson Connie Cochran stated in an email.

“Issues with an irrigation break and drainage system warped the floors,” Cochran stated.

At 5 p.m. Tuesday, the city will host a ribbon-cutting celebration to commemorate the reopening of the gymnasium at the Van Buskirk Community Center. Basketball activities and refreshments will follow Tuesday’s celebration.

“Repairs have been made and a brand-new gymnasium floor is now available for community sports activities,” the city stated in a statement. “The project was made possible through funding approved by the city council.”

While the gymnasium has remained closed since 2020, the rest of the community center was open to the public.

Repairs were made to the irrigation and drainage system, sealed the exterior wall, and fully replaced the wood floors, Cochran stated. The repairs began in 2022.
